Mobilised from the reserve and drafted to France at the outbreak of war, he fought in the retreat from Mons, the battles of Le Cateau, the Marne, the Aisne, Ypres and Neuve Chapelle. He also served throughout the Retreat and Advance of 1918 and during his service overseas was three times wounded. He was mentioned in Despatches for devotion to duty in the Field and returning home was demobilised in February 1919.
