He volunteered in November 1915 and three months later proceeded to the Western Front, where he was heavy fighting in the Somme sector and was wounded in July 1916. Whilst in France he was also in action at the Battles of Arras, Ypres, Passchendaele, Cambrai and Amiens and in the final engagements of the war.
