Volunteering in April 1915 in the Northamptonshire Regiment he completed his training and proceeded five months later to Gallipoli. There he saw heavy fighting on the Anzac Front and after evacuation of the peninsula was sent to Egypt. He was then transferred to the Mounted Military Police and in February 1917 was drafted to Palestine and took part in engagements at Gaza and Jerusalem. On his return to England he was demobilized and holds the 1914-1915 Star and the General Service and Victory Medals.
