Extract from the Devizes and Wilts Advertiser 18 June 1914. TILSHEAD, Soldiers Charged With Arson. At the County Magistrates' Offices, Devizes, on Monday, before Mr. B.H. Cunnington and the Mayor of Devizes (Mr. Herbert Sainsbury), two privates of the 51st, Battery,m Royal Field Artillery, stationed at New Copse Farm, near Tilshead, were brought up in custody charged with setting fire to a stack of straw, the property of Mr. Sidney Blake, of glebe Farm, Tilshead on the previous Saturday evening. They were Sidney Batty and George Anderson, driver an gunner respectively. P.C. Austin, stationed at Tilshead, deposed that on Sunday, June 13th, about 10.30 p.m. he was on duty in the village of Tilshead, when he saw a fire about 300 yards from the village, to the north, in the direction of New Coppice Farm, leading to the War Office property. He went to the spot and found it was a straw rick belonging to Mr. Sidney Blake, of Glebe Farm, Tilshead. Finding that it could not be put out, he went, in company with Sergeant Healy, of the Military Mounted police to New Copse Farm and there saw the Commanding Officer of the 51st Battery, R.F.A. He told him what had happened. In the meantime, Bombadier Grey had put the two prisoners under arrest on suspicion of setting fire to the rick. On Sunday, the following day, in company with P.S. Pickard, witness went to New Copse Farm and received prisoners into custody from the military authorities. he searched them and found a box of matches on Batty. He brought them to Devizes, cautioned them and charged them with wilfully and maliciously setting fire to a straw rick, the property of Mr. Sidney Blake, on the 13th June. They made no reply. Inspector Foreman said that was all the evidence he wished to lay before the Court that day. By Thursday they hoped to have the evidence complete and he asked for a remand until that day. He would the be prepared to g into the case thoroughly.o The prisoners were remanded to Devizes Gaol, until Thursday afternoon at half past three o'clock. |
