He volunteered in the Royal Field Artillery in March 1915 and later in the same year embarked for France. On this front he saw heavy fighting in the Battles of Festubert, Loos and Ypres, and was gassed during operations on the Somme in 1916. On his recovery he was transferred to the mounted Military Police, and performed excellent work until demobilised in August 1919, holding the 1914/1915 Star (not on medal card) and the General Service and Victory Medals.
