Extract from the Buckinghamshire Examiner 7 July 1916. MMP AMONGST THE FRUIT. We have received a letter from Lemnos Isler showing that R G Read, who was formerly with us in the Chesham Police, is making fine progress in the service. He is in the Military Mounted Police and can now sign himself Sergt. R G Read. Congratulations on that! He wishes to be remembered to many Chesham friends and mentions, en passant, that he met two Chesham men during his travels Leonard Wright and A Bignell. Sergt. Read's description of the island conditions makes you mouth water. Here is an excerpt from the letter:- "This island that I am now on is very pretty with very high mountains. Harvest is in full swing; it's so light here at nights that the natives gather corn all night long. There is plenty of fruit here, grapes, figs, cherries, plums, pomegranates, olives and plenty of others too numerous to mention. |
