Volunteering in 1915, he was sent to Gallipoli and served there with the Royal Engineers. Later in June 1918 he reached the Western Front and during the Advance in 1918 was in action at Cambrai and Le Cateau. Until May 1920 he served at Cologne with the Army of Occupation and on his return home was demobilised, holding the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
