Volunteering in August 1914, he was sent to the Western Front in the following November and served there for nearly five years. He fought with his Battery in the Battles of Neuve Chapelle, Ypres (II and III), Albert, Lens, Bapaume, and the Somme (I and II), and was invalided home owing to illness. Returning to France on recovery he was transferred to the Military Mounted Police, and was engaged on important duties at the base until evacuated home. Demobilised in June 1919, he holds the 1914 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
