He volunteered in September 1914 and in the following year was drafted to France, where he saw much service. He was in action at Ypres, Loos, Arras, Vimy Ridge, Lens, Bapaume and Bethune and in many later engagements. During his service he was twice gassed, on the Somme in 1916 when he was sent to Etaples hospital, and again in the Advance of 1918 when he was invalided home. After his recovery he was transferred to the Military Police, with whom he served until his demobilisation in March 1919. He holds the 1914-1915 Star and the General Service and Victory medals.
