He volunteered in February 1915 and shortly afterwards crossed to the Western Front, where he was engaged in special duties with his unit until the end of hostilities. During this period he was present at many notable engagements including those of Festubert, Loos, Messines, Vimy Ridge of 1918. After the Armistice he was sent with the Army of Occupation into Germany, and later returned home for demobilisation in July 1919. Her holds the 1914-1915 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
