He was serving when war broke out, and in 1915 was drafted to the Western Front. During his service overseas, which lasted for nearly four years, he was engaged on special duties at Arras, Amiens, Cambrai and other places, and did excellent work throughout. He returned to England for demobilisation in July 1919, and holds the 1914-15 Star (not on medal card), General Service and Victory Medals.
