Citation:   Citation for Croix de Guerre 1940 with Palm: Pte. Mcmillan, who disembarked with the unit in France in Sept 44, acted as Company runner in all the actions in which the Bn., was engaged until the cessation of hostilities in May 1945. His total disregard for his own personal safety and utter fearlessness under fire were always evident, but never more so than at HALLDEREN, HOLLAND IN Oct. 44., when for four days his Coy was in close contact with the enemy in dug-in positions and subjected, in addition, to sustained and accurate mortar and artillery fire. Throughout this period, he repeatedly made his way to Bn HQ with important intelligence when all other forms of communication were disrupted, and on his own inititative, constantly visited the foremost defences, encouraging his comrades, assisting with the evacuation of wounded and impressing all who saw him with this cheerfulness, indomitable courage and concern and consideration for his fellow men. It was undoubtedly largely due to the fine example of gallantry and selflessness that the morale of his Company remained so consistently high. Lt Col E l Percival Comd 6th HLI.
