Petty Sessions - Thursday. - Richard Ley Spicer, corporal in the military police at Shorncliffe, was committed for trial on a charge of burglariously breaking and entering the White Lion public house at Cheriton and stealing £5 5s 10d in money and other property, belonging to Henry Baldock, on December the 5th. Extract from the Canterbury Journal, Kentish Times and Farmers' Gazette 25 January 1896. BURGLARY AT CHERITON. Richard Ley Spicer, 26, soldier, pleaded guilty to burglariously entering the dwelling-house of Henry Baldock and stealing £1 9s 101/2d in money and various articles, belonging to the said Henry Baldock at Cheriton, on the 5th December. It appeared the prisoner had served about five years in the Dragoon Guards and also about five years in the Mounted Military Police. The articles stolen by prisoner had, it was stated, been recovered. Prisoner was given a good character by a Sergeant Major of the Military Mounted Police. On Monday prisoner was bound over to come up for judgment if called upon. Extract from the Folkestone Express, Sandgate, Shorncliffe & Hythe Advertiser 1 February 1896. CHERITON. The Burglary at the White Lion. - At the Assizes Richard Ley Spicer pleaded guilty to burglary at the White Lion, Cheriton. He received a good character and was bound over to come up for judgment if called upon. Corps of Military Police - At St George's Garrison Church, Aldershot, on Sunday, a memorial was unveiled by Major General H M Lawson, CB and dedicated by the Chaplain-General. The memorial consists of a stained glass window depicting Christ carrying the cross, and is inscribed: To the glory of God and in memory of Lance Corporal's Winn, Wetherly, and Spicer, Military Mounted Police and Carey, Large, Roads and Burton, Military Foot Police, who lost their lives in the South African War, 1899-1902, this memorial was erected by their comrades of the corps past and present.
