A regimental sergeant-major of the Royal Military Police was accused yesterday of hitting a lance corporal because his stomach was sticking out. RSM Donal Percy Tongs, 45, a Regular, was charged at Singapore with striking L/Cpl Andrew Anderson on the stomach with a pace stick on the parade ground on the morning of November 6. Slapped Twice. - Tongs, attached to0 200 Provost Company, pleaded not guilty. He comes from Doncaster, Yorks. Anderson, 25, said that whilst parading that morning the RSM singled him out as an example. "The RSM pointed out to a squad of 20 that I had and exceedingly low stomach. The RSM slapped me twice on the stomach with the back of his hand, " he said. "Before I joined the tanks the FRSM shouted I was a bloody disgrace for a man of my Age," Anderson added. Then Anderson told the court: "A few minutes later as I came to a bad halt, the RSM shouted at me to put my stomach in and hit me with the pace stick. "As a result I had a six inch long red mark and had to hold my stomach". Cross- examined, Anderson admitted the parade was in preparation for the new Provost Marshal's arrival and that he had criticised the RSM's drill instruction in his mind. An Army doctor who examined Anderson said the found a six inch red mark which was tender. The hearing goes on today. |
