Extract from a much bigger article titled "Pursued Then Skidded Into A Shop Head on." found in the Yorkshire Evening Post, 5th July 1949. HOUSE SEARCH At 12.45 Naylor, seen at his home said he had not seen Frost for two days, but when the police said they would search the house he replied "I am going to give in. All the gear you are looking for is in the bedroom." From a cupboard and suitcase the officers recovered property including 31,000 cigarettes and a large quantity of liquor and sweets. Sergeant Cyril Frederick Curtis said that after the Vauxhall had ignored his signal to stop he went to Hunslet Police Station. About 6.30 am he saw the car travelling along Low Road at about 60 mph, with a police car immediately behind. Witness hurled his truncheon at the windscreen of the Vauxhall and jumped clear. The attempt to stop the car failed. Police Constable Noel Edward Donne described how he picked up the wanted car in Moore Road, after searching Middleton and Belle Isle. The chase lasted for about six miles. In Low Road as the police car drew level, the Vauxhall tried to side-skid and crashed. Other cars joined in, and one police car swerved across the road ahead of the pursued car in an attempt to stop it. As the Vauxhall attempted a violent turn into Sheaf Street it skidded violently head on into a shop. Sergeant Grimes, Church Fenton said the missing property included 33.800 cigarettes and 45 bottles of liquor about £300 worth of property had been recovered. The other car alleged to have been stolen was later found abandoned of York Road. Beaumont and Timblin who pleaded guilty to breaking into the RAF Sergeants' Mess (Church Fenton) but not guilty of stealing the cars, and Naylor, who pleaded not guilty to receiving were sent for trial. Timblin and Naylor were granted bail. The bench commended the police.
