Saturday 27th September, 1958: General Narrowly Escapes Death. Nicosia - We can now reveal details of an attempt to assassinate the Director of Operations, yesterday. The attack occurred while Maj. Gen. D A Kendrew was en rout to Government House. An electronically controlled landmine was detonated (in error), beneath a Royal Military Police escort vehicle near Strovolos, thus giving the General's Chauffeur time to take evasive action. Three members of the General's personal escort team are now undergoing medical treatment at BMH Nicosia. One of the injured men is listed as dangerously ill. Born 29/4/1938. William Rodger Bell.
