Lance Corporal Norman William Smith (2), Military Police, Catterick was charged with conduct prejudice to good order and military discipline by not standing to attention when the National Anthem was played at a cinema at Catterick Camp. He pleased guilty and was sentenced subject to confirmation to 56 days detention. It was stated that he walked out of the cinema when the anthem was played. Lt. M ER C Berryman, the 17/21st Lancers, defending, said Smith, a National Serviceman had got an idea that he did not believe in Royalty. He was an atheist. At his age Smith had his own ideas and was evidently showing off. he should be rapped over the knuckles and told not to be so stupid.
