J Caldwell, 569 Area Employment Company, Labour Corps: 3rd Evidence. No. 9558 Lance Corporal Henry William Smith, MFP states- Whilst on duty at FAA Bridge leading to Monitor Quai at about 7.30 am on 21st November, 1918, a French policeman (Adolphe Cloaree, No. 33) came to me and I understood from him that he wished me to come with him to the Quai de la Citadelle. He there called my attention to the body of a British soldier floating in the water. I immediately telephoned the Military Foot Police Office at the Docks and No. 1265 A/Sgt Styles shortly afterwards arrived by bicycle at the Quai de la Citadelle. I obtained a rope and with the assistance of the French policeman and No.1256 Sgt W Styles the body was landed on the Quai. Signed No. 9558 H W Smith, L/Cpl, MFP. Henry William Smith.
