He enlisted in the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment, No. 6647 on the 24/1/1901. Served Home 4/1/1901 to 6/1/1902, India 7/1/1902 to 20/2/1910, Home 21/2/1910 to 6/8/1914, BEF 7/8/1914. He served as a drummer in the Queens Regiment for 6 years and transferred to the MFP, No.1113, 15/12/1910 and transferred to the MPSC 1/4/1913 serving in Dublin, 20/9/1914 promoted Cpl, 17/5/1915 promoted A/P/Sgt, 2/4/1916 promoted Sgt, 13/3/1917 promoted A/P/S/Sgt. Embarked Southampton 6/8/14, arrived Rouen 21/8/14. 13/3/17 4 Military Prison, Abancourt. Court of enquiry into his death stated that he accidentally shot himself with his own pistol whilst returning it to his holster. Incident occurred in a flint quarry at Blargies whilst guarding prisoners and taking part in pistol practice. 16/4/1913 he married Anastasia Lawler at the RC Church , Rathgar, Dublin.
