Served Home 2/2/1891 to 12/7/1898, Gibraltar 13/7/1898 to 3/10/1899, Home 4/10/1899 to 18/3/1900, South Africa 19/3/1900 to 31/12/1900, Home 1/1/1901 to 23/9/1908,Malta 24/9/1908 to 9/10/1911, Home 10/10/1911 to 1/3/1912. 9/11/1899 married Cicely M Allen at the Tower of London. 22/8/1908 promoted S/Sgt. 2/112/1014 he re enlisted in the Army Service Corps No. M2/021141 as Mechanical Sergeant Major, age 43 years, occupation Park Keeper, address: Whiteley Park, Bush, Walton on Thames. Served Home 2/12/1914 to 21/3/1915, Mediterranean Exp Force 22/3/1915 to 7/2/1917 when he died at Halfa Hospital from typhoid. He left the Base MT Depot, Cairo on the steamer She Llll Hayfa Express Steamer when he was taken ill. A letter in is Service Record dated 28/5/1917 to the ASC record office states that two cases containing Sergeant Major Francombe's effects had been lost when the ship SS Polam Hall was sunk and all cargo lost, attached is a list of contents of the cases. There is also a detailed report of his illness and death. A card with his medal card headed: Medal for Long Service & Good Conduct, O I/C ASC Records. 68/ASC/3956. 13/2/1917. (previously MPSC - 1327). Action Taken Letter of O i/c ASC Records, Woolwich. It has been ascertained this WO died at Alexandria - no further action will be taken by this board regarding his claim for L S & G C medal. This WO's application has been refused twice, once in 1912 before he was discharged to pension when it was refused as he had not been recommended by his CO. Again int 1915 subsequent to his re enlistment and refused for reason as stated above. 31/3/1917. Alban Edward Francombe.
