Embarked Southampton 10/4/1918 to Salonika. 11/11/1918 admitted to 48 General Hospital, Salonika with Malaria, Pneumonia. Transferred to MFP 5/6/17. Inscription on gravestone: We have lost, heaven gained one of the best the world contained. Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects: 14/121/1918 died 48 General Hospital, Salonika, 23/4/1919 widow Florrie received £31-10-09. Letter in his Army Record: To OC 18 General Hospital. Ref No. P/10877, L/Cpl Smethurst J, MFP. Disease Pneumonia. Admitted to the 48 General Hospital on November 11th, suffering from Bronco Pneumonia. In spite of all treatment he never showed any power of recovery and the pneumonia extended rapidly, both lungs being involved. On the morning of November 14th he was very collapsed, with a very feeble pulse, and was delirious during the day. he gradually got worse, and died at 21/45hr. The disease was contacted on active service, and due to conditions on active service. She also received the following property of her late husband: wallet, letters, photographs and cards, disc, metal watch (8day) & strap, 2 pipes, leather purse, cap badge, 4 Turkish coins, metal charm, small sock, registered envelope.
