Extract from the Sheffield Independent 5 October 1915. SAD END TO AN ADVENTUROUS CAREER. A sensation was caused in Scunthorpe yesterday when it became known that Corporal Arthur Ernest Lockwood, who was 45 years of age, was the second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Lockwood, of Cemetery Road, Scunthorpe. He had had an adventurous career at the age of 18 he joined the 19th hussars with whom he had unbroken connection for 13 years. When the South African war broke out he was called up as a reservist and re-joining the 19th Hussars went through that campaign. When peace was declared he served a year with Baden-Powell's Mounted Police. He then went digging for gold and later returned to Scunthorpe. His health was indifferent while he was in England and he again went abroad. On the outbreak of war he joined the Military Mounted Police and was sent to the Dardanelles. he was twice wounded and eventually brought back to England. Becoming convalescent, he was given ten days leave and only returned to Aldershot last Friday. An inquest was held at Aldershot yesterday, when a verdict of suicide whilst of unsound mind was returned.
