Derby - The Chief Constable has received information of the death in France of L/Cpl Edward Jennings, of the MFP. In a letter to Capt Haywood, a comrade states that it was a great shock to him on getting up on the morning of March 13th to find L/Cpl Jennings lying next to him and on the point of passing away. He died without speaking or opening his eyes. He had never had a days illness whilst out in France, or complained of feeling ill. After he had made the discovery his friend was taken to hospital for examination, and certified to have died from cardiac failure following acute fever contracted on military service. At the funeral the troops in the vicinity were well represented, also the French Gendarmes and the Civil Population. On the coffin were placed three artificial wreath from the troops, and two bouquets of flowers from the French Civilians. L/Cpl Jennings enlisted in the MFP in November 1915. He is named on the Derbyshire Constabulary War Memorial L/Cpl E Jennings, Military Foot Police, Died 13/3/1918.
