Charles Cornish. Extract from the Western Times 10 August 1917. Brave Devon Lads who have made the Great Sacrifice. Lance Corporal C Cornish, Military Mounted Police, AMP, who has died at Kut El Amara. He was 24 years old and a son of Mrs K H Cornish of Gloster Road, Barnstaple, formerly of Fremington. The deceased was employed on the L & SWR at Fremington Quay. (article has small photograph of L/Cpl Cornish in khaki drill uniform.) Extract from the North Devon Journal 9 August 1917. FREMINGTON SOLDIER'S SAD DEATH. Mrs Cornish, of 12 Gloster Road, Barnstaple, formerly of Fremington, was on Friday officially notified of the death from heat stroke on July 22, of her son, Lance Corporal, Chas. Cornish (formerly of the Devons, and latterly a member of the Military Mounted Police. Lance Corporal Cornish was apparently in good health when he last wrote home from Kut-el-Amara, the letter being received about six weeks ago; and the communication from the War Office announcing his death consequently came as a great shock to the bereaved mother and family. Lance Corporal Cornish will be remembered as the first volunteer from the parish of Fremington, having "joined up" within a fortnight of the outbreak of war and having proceeded to India with the 2/6th Devons in December, 1914. A little later he had the company of his brother, Pte. Fred Cornish, who has latterly also been in Mesopotamia. A man of fine physique (standing over six feet in height), Lance Corporal, Cornish was also a devoted son having been the sole support of his mother, who was left a widow with ten children some eight years ago. With Mrs. Cornish and her family in their sorrow general sympathy will be expressed.
