He died from concussion of the brain at the camp hospital, Clipstone Camp. He fell off the running board of a private car (newspaper report in his army record). FATAL FALL NEAR MANSFIELD - Sad Accident to Member of Military Mounted Police. A shocking accident, with fatal terminations befel a member of the Military Mounted Police. Private Albert Clarke, stationed at Clipstone Camp on Friday night. The deceased officer was on duty in Macclesfield during Friday evening, and at 11.15 he mounted a conveyance to return to the camp. When the vehicle was passing Sherwood Hall private Clarke was seen to fall heavily from the steps into the road. He was at once removed to the camp, where he was placed in hospital and medical aid rendered. His skull, it is stated, was found to have been fractured and he died on Saturday afternoon.
