Extract from the Daily Gazette for Middlesbrough 12 July 1917. Aukland PC's Heroism. Corporal Cooper, formerly a police constable at Bishop Aukland, has died in Mesopotamia. while serving with the Military Mounted Police. According to information received, one of Cooper's comrades Corporal Bullock (P/1662), was watering the horses and slipped into deep water. Cooper, noticing him, went after him in order to save him, but was carried down stream and drowned. Bullock was saved by an Indian but a fortnight later died from heart failure.
