Citation:   Italy. Citation for BEM: Duiring the period Oct 44 to Feb 45 armed highway and other violent robberies affecting Allied interests and attributable to deserters and civilian desperadoes were rife in Southern Italy, terrorising the civilian population. SGT ORDWAY was engaged on special duty with a selected Police squad to combat this grave threat to law and order. His opponents were notorious gunmen both military and civilians who used their arms without hesitation. He personally effected the arrest of many of these gangsters. This NCO's conduct was an outstanding example of courage, tenacity and devotion to duty which involved shooting affrays and physical violence. The efforts of SGT ORDWAY were far beyond the demands of his normal duty and were responsible to a great extent for the successful liquidation of these terrorist gangs. Lt Col H V McNally DPM 3 District. Maj Gen Comd 3 District. National Archive WO 373/73. His number is shown as 7692841 in National Archive item. |
