Widow Alice Louise of 16 Castle Street, Saffron Walden. 17/5/1918 she received £5 grant, 4/11/1918 she received 15/9 per week pension. Info from Army Register of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929. 13/4/1918 killed in action, France, 27/8/1918 his widow Alice received £3-12-06, and on 2/11/1919 she received a further £13 war gratuity. Percy John Beard. Extract from the Cambridge Daily News, 3/5/18. CPL P J BEARD. A letter has been received from an officer of the Argyll and Sutherland highlanders by his friends to say the Cpl. Percy John Beard, Military Foot Police attached to the above regiment, was killed by a shell on April 13th. Cpl. Beard was the son of Mr John Beard, of Grays, and was stationed at Saffron Walden for several years as a member to the Essex Police Force. He married Miss Louise Jeffery, the eldest daughter of the late Mr Davis Jeffery, shoeing smith, Saffron Walden, and leaves a Widow but no family. He joined up in 1915, and was stationed in Ireland for about a year, and afterwards remained in England, going to ?France about ten months ago. He was 28 years of age.
