Personal letter sent to his wife and a cheque to the value of £25 as a result of voluntary subscription within the unit. War Diary WO 171/17813 86 Section SIB. 21/5/45 information from Lille detachment investigating alleged murder of L/Cpl Winship, 247 Pro Coy, CMP by 2 coloured USA soldiers 23.00 hrs 20th inst. Casualty List 1782, Western Europe, Died Result of Accident, 20/5/1945. Inscription on gravestone: At the going down of the sun and in the morning , we will remember. Ernest Winship.
