Extract from the Derby Daily Telegraph, 21/6/43. Life Wasted Through Lack of Care. "It is a great pity that such a useful life should have been wasted for the lack of a seconds care" said the Derby Coroner Mr T h Bishop, recording a verdict of "Accidental death" at the inquest on Saturday into the death of Lance Corporal Cyril Howgate Watson of 51, North Park Street, Dewsbury.. Lance Corporal Watson serving with the Corps of Military Police was fatally injured on Friday afternoon when the motorcycle he was riding was in collision with a Corporation Trolley Bus at the junction of St Thomas's road and Portland Street, Derby. Driver Blameless. The coroner said that the accident was entirely due to Watson's bad riding. "It was his fault without any question" he added "no blame can be attached to the driver of the Trolley Bus." The driver of the bus, John Douglas Strange of 43 Little Over Lane, Derby said that coming down St Thomas' Lane his speed reached about 15 mph. He then shut off the current and coasted as he approached the junction. He was near the corner when he saw the motorcyclist coming at a fair speed. Broadside Collision. It seemed obvious that he was not going to stop and he (Strange) braked hard and swerved to the offside. The motorcycle came across the front of the but and hit it broadside on. When he got out he found Watson and the motorcycle underneath the front of the bus. Ignored Halt. An eye witness Mrs Doreen Williams of 154 St Thomas's Road, Derby said that the motorcyclist did not slacken speed or stop at the halt sign as he approached the junction. A passenger on the bus Mrs Hanna Pipes, of 218 Station Road, Melbourne also stated that Watson did not reduce speed and ignored the halt sign. The cause of death was stated to be a fractured skull and injuries to the body.
