WO 166/492. 4/3/1941 Message received from 69th Medium Regiment RA that L/Cpl Swindall was involved in a fatal accident near Storrington (Sussex), CMP records informed of casualty by telephone. Telephone message to records confirmed Mrs Swindall wired as to disposal of body. Inquest fixed by Local Police for 14.00 hrs 6/3/1941. DAD claims notified, report sent to DAPM. 6/3/1941 Arrangements made for 2/Lt Maurice and Sgt Richardson to attend inquest at Storrington at 14.00 hrs, verdict accidental death. Death of L/Cpl Swindall, body placed on train for Burton on Trent, his Smith & Wesson pistol No.158708 was stolen from the scene of the accident. Full miliary honours were accorded at the funeral of Lance Corporal John Joseph Swindall of the Corps of Military Police of Lacedown Road, Swadlincote, who was killed in a motorcycling accident at the age of 32. The Rev. A R Cornwall conducted a service i the York Road Methodist Church and the internment in Gresley Cemetery. The procession was headed by RSM Lovatt and Mr L J Murray and in connection with the sad events effective co operations was given by the deceased's Commanding Officer, the Officer Commanding the South Staffordshire Regiment, the LMS, the Midland Bus Company, CSM P Pearson, DCM, MM, Mr A Scragg, Mr E Whittaker, Capt J T G Padgett. Mr E Venning and Mr G Valliance. The Home Guard paraded under Sgt Holt by kind permission of Lt/Col, M M Morgan-Owen, DSO, the British Legion contingent standard was carried by Mr A Edwards. The coffin was draped with the union flag and at the graveside four volleys were fired. Then a list of mourners. A small photograph on L/Cpl Swindall accompanied the above.
