News reached Grantham a few days ago that L/Cpl Desmond Swain, aged 27, attached to the Corps of Military Police, only son of Mr and Mrs, George Swain, 2 Albert Terrace, had had the honour of figuring in the escort to Generals Alexander and Anderson in the spectacular victory march through Tunis. "I feel very proud stated his mother to a the Journal's Reporter. Other members of his Company escorted the American and French Generals, but Desmond was chosen to escort General Alexander and Anderson. He is so well know in Grantham that all his friends will be interested to learn the news. He receives the Journal every week. His wife Mrs D Swain, who lives at 32 Cliffe Road, Gonerby Hill regularly hears from him once a week. They have one child, Angela who was born in March whilst he was abroad. Mrs Swain recalled that in April she recognised her son in a photograph which appeared in the national press, showing him escorting a batch of prisoners of war. A native of Grantham, L/Cpl Swain was educated at the Boys' Central School. He had qualified for Hull City Police Force when war broke out and he volunteered for the military police, going abroad with the First Army. Previously he was employed for a short time in the grocery department of the Grantham Co-Operative Society. He is a keen all round sportsman, and was a member of the local Coop FC and Grantham cycling Club.
