ARMY SERGEANT'S FATAL CRASH. LANGPORT GIRL SERIOUSLY INJURED. A Sergeant in the Military Provost Staff Corps, Edward Albert Smith, aged 27, was killed and his pillion passenger Miss Aileen Chubb, 25, hairdresser, of 68 Garden City, Langport, seriously injured on Saturday afternoon when the motorcycle on which they were riding crashed into a bus at Dunwear Nr Bridgwater. The driver of the bus was Dorothy Sellers of 90 Wembdon Road, Bridgewater, employed by the Western National Omnibus Co. Apparently a head on collision occurred at the second bend in Western Zowland Road, Bridgewater outside Dunwear Farm. Both riders were thrown off and rendered unconscious, Miss Chubb having been flung against a wall They were conveyed by ambulance to Bridgwater Hospital, Smith was found to be dead and his body was taken to the mortuary Miss Chubb was detained with serious head injuries and a broken wrist. The Deputy Borough Coroner Mr H A Cliders opened the inquest at the Bridgwater Court House on Monday. Sergt. William Baulch, of the same corps identified the body stating that he had known Smith for ten months and that he had been in the Army about 13 years. A sister of Smith Mrs Florence May Rye of 171 Silver Road, Norwich said she last saw her brother on January 13th. His sight and hearing were good and he had ridden a motorcycle for two and half to three years. The inquest was adjourned for a month.
