Haywards Heath Soldier Dies Suddenly. Private H W ridge of the Military Police A few hours after saying goodbye to her husband Private Herbert William Ridge, Corps of Military Police on his return to duty after a short period of leave Mrs Ridge received a telephone message that he had passed away. Private Ridge who thus died at the age of 47 with such tragic suddenness was formerly a Civil Servant attached to the Ministry of Labour. Mr and Mrs Ridge moved to 70 Gordon Road, Haywards Heath at the beginning of the war, and in July, 1940 Mr Ridge resigned his post in the Civil Service in order to volunteer for the Army. He served first in the Royal Sussex Regiment later being transferred to the Corps of Military Police where he was promoted Sergeant but he relinquished this promotion and returned to the ranks in order to take and appointment nearer home. A keen musician - a saxophonist and accordionist - Pte Ridge ran a dance orchestra of his own when working at Croydon. He leaves a Widow and one son. THE FUNERAL took place on Saturday morning. The Rev. T W Daniel (Priest in Charge) officiated at the service which was held at St. Richard's Church. The coffin was draped with the Union Jack was borne into the church by Military Police under the command of Sergeant Fisher. (this is followed by a list of mourners).
