Inscription on private gravestone: In fond remembrance of my beloved son Pte Ian Macleod, born 9 June 1915 who was drowned at Glasgow docks on the 24 November 1943 whilst serving with H M Forces, Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. Erected by his devoted Mother. War Diary WO 166/13694 177 Port Coy. 24/11/43. Pte Macleod CMP (VP) drowned as a result of a fall into the dock at Rothsay Dock in hours of darkness. Attention is drawn to C of E for need of better torches which we are unable to obtain. 26/11/43 Body of deceased Pte. MacLeod sent by rail to home in Dingwall. Also War Diary WO 166/13692 175 Ports Coy. December 1943. Death. Part I Order. The following Provost Instruction is quoted for information of all. "I much regret to record the accidental death through drowning of No. 2889170 Pte Macleod I CMP VP which took place whilst on duty at Glasgow on the 24/11/43. This accident occurred on a very dark night and wet morning and could have been avoided had the soldier carried a torch.
