This afternoon there was a large gathering at the Military Cemetery to witness the funerals of Pensioner Ross R P who committed suicide; of Sergt. Carter, Military Mounted Police who was cut to pieces on the railway; and Private Kent, RMLI (Plymouth Division). The funeral party in connection with Carter's interment was found by the 9th Lancers, and was attended by all the military and civilian police off duty, including the Provost Marshall (Capt. Emerson), the deputy chief constable of the county (Mr C H Stephenson), railway officials and others. Extract from the Reading Mercury 8 June 1985. The Death of Sergt. Alfred Carter. The police are still enquiring into the mysterious circumstances attending the death of Sergeant Alfred Carter of the Military Mounted Police, whose mutilated body was found on the line at Newtown. The deceased, who was 42 years old, was a most sober and respectable man and was about to take his discharge and get married. He was formerly in the King's Dragoon Guards. His funeral, which was attended by a large concourse of spectators, was carried out with military honours.
