Military Honours at Funeral. The remains of Lance Corporal Armond Cannell were laid to rest in St Andrew's churchyard on Saturday, April 12th. Armond or "Pluck" as he was popularly known met an untimely end through an accident, whilst serving in His Majesty's Forces the coffin covered with the Union Jack was carried by six members of the Special Constabulary, Messrs, Chick, Cox, Ryall, Goodland, Fry and Merrefield. The cortege headed by a firing party proceeded at a slow march to the church gates where the firing party opened ranks and stood at the present, as the coffin was carried in. A detachment of military under Captain Cubitt and a strong muster of the Home Guards under Sergt Major S Lemon and Quarter Master Sergeant W G Hoddinott. Mrs Smith was at the organ and the hymns sung were "When I survey the Wondrous Cross" and "Through all the changing scenes of life." "The Dead March" was played at the end of the service; three volleys were fired over the grave and the "Last Post" and "Reveille" were sounded by Mr Harry Wareham of Shaftesbury."Pluck was a man of fine physique and was the sixth son of Mr and Mrs S M Cannell who have lived in Fontmell Magna for the past 31 years. He was a great athlete and was know over a wide area as a boxer of no mean ability. His popularity was shown by the large gathering of friends present.
