The following was found in his army record: Assistance to Civil Police. The Officer Commanding, Military Police Corps, Aldershot. I forward herewith a copy of a report received from the Commissioner of Police regarding the assistance rendered by Lance Corporal Nobes and Wadden, Military Foot Police to the Civil Police on the night of the 27th. The Major General Commanding Belfast District considers that the report reflects great credit upon the non commissioned officers and suggests that a copy of this report be attached to their documents for record. Belfast 2/4/1897. Statement. City of Belfast, Glenravel Street, 28/3/1897. I beg to state that I was on duty at the Queen's Hotel on Saturday the 27th instant, at about 10.15pm I arrested for being drunk and disorderly a man who afterwards gave his name as John Kennedy, Carrick Hill. The prisoner did everything possible to resist arrest. He struck me several blows on the face and body with his clenched fist and also kicked me severely. A large crowd had assembled and I found it impossible to take my prisoner through it to the car. I the blew my whistle and Constable McCharry came running to my assistance. When we both started to lift the prisoner, to carry him to the car he hit Constable McCharry a violent kick on the forehead which almost knocked him down. The crowd which was growing larger every second, rushed in upon us, some of them kicking and boxing us Constable McCharry drew his baton and drove them back. Lance Corporals Nobes and Waddon of the Military Provost the interfered on our behalf and with their assistance we handcuffed the prisoner and brought him to the police office. The conduct of the Provost was everything that could be expected of soldiers. Constable McCharry has also entered a charge of assault against the prisoner. Signed James Anderson, Cons. 55154, Glenravel Street, 28/3/97. Arthur Nobes. Edward Waddon. He has the same No. as L/Cpl J Smith MMP.
