Quartermaster C Broakes, Military mounted police, from Assistant Provost Marshal at the Curragh, to be a Provost Marshal at Aldershot with the relative rank of Captain, vice Quartermaster W Silk, Deceased. Dated 5/7/1885. Extract from the Sheldrake, Aldershot & Sandhurst Military Gazette, 1/6/1878. It gives us much pleasure to be able to announce that Sergeant-Major Wm. Silk, of the Military Mounted Police has been gazetted Quartermaster. Quartermaster Silk, who has seen 26 years service, was transferred in April, 1961, from the 9th Queen's Lancers as sergeant, and attached to the Military Mounted Police at this station, and was shortly afterwards promoted sergeant-major. Up to August last year the force consisted of two men from each regiment, when it was formed into a distinct corps, under the command of Captain Trout, the officer under notice being retained as sergeant-major. It is expected that Quartermaster Silk will be removed to the Curragh, and take command of the portion of this corps at that station. During his stay in Aldershot Mr. Silk has proved himself an efficient officer and has earned the goodwill and friendship of many friends by his courtesy and kindness.
