THE LOSS OF HMS HYTHE - 143 SOLDIERS DROWNED. Many Sappers formerly stationed in St. Pauls Schoolroom. The following casualties are reported as a result of the accident to HM Fleet Auxiliary Hythe. Many of the Sappers of the Royal Engineers were formerly stationed in St. Paul's Schoolroom, Sheerness. It was announced by the Admiralty at the end of October that the Hythe, an auxiliary sweeper had sunk during the night of October 28-29 after collision with another of HM Ships off Gallipoli, and the two Army Officers and 143 men were missing in addition to the crew. Charles Cooper, 21, Military Mounted Police (transferred from the 20th Hussars, of Albert Street, Walsall, lost his life in the disaster which befell HM Auxiliary ship Hythe, which sand off Gallipoli. He was a case maker in the employ of Messrs. Boys, of Bleck Road, prion to enlisting soon after the outbreak of war, His widowed mother learned the same week that another son, Pte. Herbert Cooper (27), whose wife lives at Old Butts, had died from wounds sustained while in action with the South Staffords. Extract from the Walsall Advertiser 20 November 1915. DROWNED WHILST ON THE WAY TO GALLIPOLI. Corporal Charles Cooper, of 12, Albert Street of the 1st Res. Regt. Cavalry, attached to the Mounted Military Police, is reported by the War Office to have been drowned in H.M.S. Hythe, after a collision, whilst on the way to the Dardanelles. Corporal Cooper, who was 21 years of age, joined the 20th Hussars in August 1914 and eager to get to the front he transferred himself to the 5th Dragoon Guards and from there was transferred to the Mounted Police. Previous to joining the army he was a case maker in the employ of Messrs. Boys and Son, of Pleck Road. A brother, Hubert, was killed about three months ago with the Royal Warwicks and another brother, Frank, enlisted in the Warwicks about a fortnight ago..
