Citation:   Acts of Courage Extracted From The Corps Order Books. P/9207 LANCE CORPORAL C WHITEHURST 2 TRAFFIC CONTROL COMPANY MILITARY FOOT POLICE Extract from 4th Army Routine Orders 2457 dated 2/9/18. The Army Commander wishes to express his appreciation of the following act of courage:- On the 21st August 1918 a pair of mules, harnessed to a GS wagon took fright and bolted without their driver; No P/9207 L/Cpl Whitehurst of No2 Traffic Control Company, who was on duty at a cross roads, saw them approaching and running towards them, succeeded in clinging to the reins of the near mule. Although dragged for about 100 yards, he brought the mules to a standstill just before they reached the cross-roads, where a continuous stream of traffic was passing at the time. By his prompt and courageous action he undoubtedly prevented a serious accident. A record of the above will be made in the Regimental Conduct Sheet of L/Cpl Whitehurst, in accordance with KR's para 1919 (XIV) Authority:- OC No2 Traffic Control Company dated 17/9/18 (AFO 1810 BEF, MFP, No 42 dated 21/9/18). |
