His sense of anticipation, coolness and determination averted many sectarian clashes which could have become serious riots. He came under attack from stones, clubs, firearms and explosives a number of times and on one occasion suffered a severe head injury while rescuing a soldier from a mob. Throughout his tour, Staff Sergeant Watt never once hesitated in the face of danger and he set examples of steadiness, professional skill and leadership above the ordinary.
