Citation:   New Year Honours. 24031829 (Acting Staff Sergeant) Michael Geoffrey Slocombe. 111 Pro Coy, RMP. NCO in charge Verden Police Post. January 1981 - April 1983. Sergeant Slocombe has just completed 27 months as the sole member of the Verden Police Post. His previous 18 years of distinguished service have included tours of duty in Northern Ireland and Berlin. Although he has been a highly professional and much respected policeman, with a quite exceptional sense of devotion to duty, it has been his actions as an outstanding member of the community in general that provides the extra thrust required for this citation. He and his family have played a major part in establishing and maintaining superb links between the local German and British communities. His fluency in German, abundant tact and personality are attributes that he has used to the benefit of the Army and its dependants when dealing with the German authorities. When in the field he has used the same outstanding qualities, particularly during Exercise RED CLAYMORE and QUARTER FINAL (both major FTSs) to produce an immensely effective and high successful RMP/German safety control and movement organisation. On these and many other smaller exercises his displays of initiative, his firm determination, as well as hit timely and diplomatic action in his dealings with the civil population and uniformed bodies have smoothed away possible causes of friction with the British Army. Within the garrison itself Sgt Slocombe has been the model of a local community policeman. his advice has been available at all hours and he has always concentrated on the human side of justice rather than on its purely legalistic form. he has worked tirelessly in the wider field and has been an outstanding organiser and supporter of functions in support of the local school, youth work and all garrison activities. In particular his contribution to three Anglo-German weekends, to two Freedom Parades and several Tattoos and Horse Shows has been quite exceptional. This quite outstanding local policeman has made an immense contribution as a crime preventer and as a community policeman in the widest sense. His overall conduct and immense hard work throughout his military service justify this citation on their own merit, but his selfless personal contribution in the wider field, particularly over the past two years in Verden, make hi an exceptionally deserving candidate for recognition.
