Citation:   Maj (Temp) North West Europe. Citation. 11 Armd Div, 159 Brigade, 1 Herfordshire Regiment At NE of Birghte (MR 9406 sheet No ), on April 1st 1945, "A" Company was ordered to clear the position known to be held by enemy from the heavily wooded west flank. The Company got about 400 x into the woods when quite suddenly heavy fire was opened on it on three sides pinning down any attempt at movement. major tapper attempted to move round to a flank with his reserve platoon, but again found himself outflanked by enemy fire. With the whole unit pinned, the enemy commenced counter-attacking. During the three hours between 17.00 hrs and 20.00 hrs five counter attacks were put in. These attacks were in superior numbers to our own force, and each time, "A" Coy suffered casualties. All Leaders including two officers, the CSM, two Sgts and 6 Corpls were killed or wounded, and also 50% of the Company. By superb coolness and personal bravery, Major Tapper rallied his men after each counter-attack. With no leaders to rely upon he went to each of his sub-units encouraging them and coordinated their positions Ammunition ran short, and Major Tapper organised the collection from casualties and redistribution. During the whole time the Company was under constant rifle and MG fire from a very mobile enemy, who turned out to be considerably superior in numbers. But for Major Tapper's example and complete control of the situation was an inspiration to all who saw him.
