Citation: Queen's Birthday Honour. P/424144 Major W J N Wood, OC SIB Hong Kong. 15/4/1970 to 25/1/1972. Citation. Although this citation covers the period 15/4/70 to 25/1/1972, I have known this officer over a period of years and have worked closely with him on a previous tour of duty. During the period under review he has shown himself to be a first class SIB officer dedicated to his job and of complete integrity. During this period as a result of Major Woods diligence the investigation rate has risen by a good 50% and the detection rate has risen accordingly. The observation rate has risen by as much as 70%. His unit has a very heavy workload, three hundred and thirty nine cases in 1971, and Major wood has been personally responsible for the investigation of a number of difficult cases including an extremely complicated paymaster fraud which took six months of painstaking investigation, a considerable amount of which was done outside normal working hours. He has never spared himself in personally carrying out investigations and supervising the work of his unit. He has been a tremendous inspiration to his NCO's in this respect. So much to that they are also prepared to work equally long hours on investigations and observations. On his own initiative ha has spent many hours both on and off duty in improving relations with his opposite numbers in the Royal Hong Kong Police resulting in complete trust and first class co-operation in this field. He has shown himself particularly keen on crime prevention and has spent a considerable amount of his leisure time lecturing to schools, wives clubs and family groups on this subject. He is particularly keen on the prevention of the misuse of drug sand has spent much of his normal leisure time in observation work and on lecturing and advising schools and families on this particular subject. He formed a drug squad within his unit and I am confident that the activities of this squad have helped considerably to keep the misuse of drugs by servicemen and their dependents in Hong Kong to the low level which it is. The staff and units are constantly praising the quality of the work done by SIB in the colony and this is as result of the leadership and example shown to the members of SIB by Major Wood.
