Citation:   Military Medal Citation. Cassino, Italy During the night of 11/12 May 1944 the above named NCO went forward with the infantry to assist with traffic control at mr 868184 Italy, in the assault crossing of the RIVER GARI (also known as RAPIDO). On the night of 12/13 May 1944 he was the only CMP on duty near the river, the remaining NCO's being casualties. He remained on duty at AMAZON BRIDGE (class 30 bridge south of Cassino) with only 5 hours break until relieved at 1200 hours 15 May 1944, a period of approximately 4 days. Upon arrival of reliefs he was ordered to a point further back but asked that he may be permitted to remain at the river as he was fully conversant with the duties required, regardless that it was still under heavy shellfire. He showed exceptional bravery in the face of almost continuous enemy fire, giving confidence and setting an outstanding example. Awarded an immediate MM. Recommended by OC 4 Div Pro Coy.
