Harry Slater. Extract from the Manchester Evening News March 1917. Stockport Policeman's Gallantry at the Front. On March 11 a couple of horses attached to a wagon took fright and bolted near the trenches at the front. Corporal H. Slater of the Military Mounted Police, who is a member of the Stockport Borough Police Force, chased the runaway on his horse, and getting ahead dismounted and climbing into the wagon as it passed got along the pole and on to one of the horses, and after being taken about a quarter of a mile succeeded in pulling the animals up. The Corporal has received the following letter from Lieutenant General Aylmer Hunter-Weston "It is with great pleasure that I have heard of your gallantry, self-possession, and determination on the night of March 11, when you stopped the runaway horses attached to an empty GS wagon. I congratulate you on your splendid action and its success."
