Superintendent Herbert Simmonds, who has just been appointed to take charge of Bexhill division, is a Tonbridge man. He was born at 67 Prior Street, his father worked on the Somerhill estate for 35 years as a bricklayer, and was well known in the town. Mr Simmonds left the town at the age of 16,, having been educated at St. Stephen's School and worked as a grocer's boy for Mr Burgess, of Priory Street. He joined the East Sussex County Constabulary at Lewes in 1909, and 3wa afterwards sttio0ned at Bexhill and Seaford. He joined the Military Foot Policer in 1915 and was transferred to the 4th Bn. Royal Sussex Regiment in 1917, serving with it in Egypt, Palestine and Belgium. He rejoined the police in 1919, and served at Bexhill and Seaford. He became a sergeant in 1926 and was stationed at Lewes, Rottingdean, Peacehaven and Buxted before he went to Portslade in 1933 as an inspector. He now returns to Bexhill, where he spent six years as a policer constable.
