In consequence of a large number of members of the Blackpool Police Force having applied to the Chief Constable for permission to join the Army to do duty as military foot police, the Watch Committee held a special meeting at the Town Hall, on Tuesday, and sanctioned the enlistment of fifteen men. These are Police Constables Jno. McHale, No. not found), Herbert Smith (P/2301), Albert Richmond (P/2306), George Murry, (No. not found), Alfred Kerfoot (P/2311), John A Cooper (P/2307), Granville Hallworth (P/2309), William Shenty (P/2313), Christopher W Pattinson (P/2304), Alexander Fletcher (P/2302), Joseph Noble (P/2308), William Carew (P/2312), John Talbot (P/2303), Thomas Dalton (P/2310) and William T Clayton. The Watch Committee met the men generously. They decided to grant to the wife and children of a soldier or sailor policeman, or, if he was unmarried, to his dependents, an allowance from the police funds within the limits, and subject to the conditions specified in the Police Reservists (Allowances) Act, 1914. The service rendered by constables in the army or navy who return to the police force will be reckoned as ordinary service for purposes of police pensions. In the case of men who die, or are disabled whilst on military or naval service, the Court decided to supplement and pension granted from Imperial funds, up to the limit specified in Section 1 of the Police Constables (Naval and Military Service) Act, 1914. The men enlisted are now having a short leave, and they will journey to Aldershot on Monday next. There are now 32 Blackpool constables in his Majesty's forces. We understand that several more applications are being made for sanction to enlist. Extract from the Blackpool Gazette & Herald 16 November 1915.
