Sir Gennydd George Traherne. Extract from the Pontypridd Observer 16/6/1945. The Conservative Candidate. The Conservative candidate in the Pontypridd Division is Capt. Cennydd G Traherne of Coedarhydyglyn near Cardiff and his agent is Mr W W Cliffe of Cardiff. Capt Traherne was adopted as Conservative and National candidate in the spring on 1939 and he has been released from military duties overseas in order to contend the election. Born at Coedarhydyglyn where he and his wife farm 150 acres and where he recently entertained HRH Princess Elizabeth, Capt. Traherne went to Oxford University on leaving school and studied law, in which he gained his BA degree. Later he became a Barrister at Law and had started to practise on the South Wales Circuit shortly before the war. As a Territorial he was called up for service on September 3, 1939 and served with the Royal Artillery in the United Kingdom until 1943 when he was seconded to the Corps of Military Police as the company commander of the British Corps Provost Company, he took his unit to France in 1944 and landed there on D plus four. He served in that capacity during the campaigns in France, Belgium and Holland and was lateer posted to the Provost Staff at Second British Army Headquarters as Deputy Assistant Provost Marshal. With the Second British Army he participated in the final phases of the battle in German. Capt Traherne opened his campaign on Monday with a meeting at Cowbridge. He has appointed as his agent Mr W W Cliffe, of Cardiff, who served as an Engineer officer in the Merchant Nay until he was wounded. Mr Cliffe later acted a a Merchant Navy representative for the Ministry of Information and visited America where he organised meting in support of the Bundles for Britain movement, he has also spoken for the MIO in Ceylon and South Africa.
